Midnight Dream CD by Phillip Elcano Where Philip Elcano's "Rain Dance" was a glowing meditation on peace
and serenity, his latest, Midnight Dream, extols the sensuous delights of romance
and passion.
The spacious slow-breathing impressionism of the earlier CD has given way to sweeping
melodies, grand orchestrations, and rhythmic drive, as Elcano tells a musical
tale of a lover searching for, and finding, his beloved in the wild, misty mountains.
Along the way he witnesses a 'Dance of the Forest Fairies'--portrayed by cascading
chimes, pizzicato strings and breathy synthesizer--and rides with a herd of wild
horses (complete with the urgent sound of hooves) on the untamed 'Thunder Run'.
The pace and the drama slacken on the last few tracks, as lyrical and gentle tunes,
with titles like 'Song of the Zephyr', 'Enamorados' and 'Cricket's Poem', portray
the warm glow and pleasures of shared love.
This is poetry without words and a true joy from start to finish.

When asked which of Mr. Elcano's songs are my favourites I would rather not answer
as I am hard pressed to choose just one, but if I am cornered one that would come
to mind is "Thunder Run".
Closing my eyes I am instantly transported to another place, another
time, I can almost feel the mist of the fall morning in the air as the herd begins
to stampede.
(The soundtrack for the horses in this compositon is the same one used for the
horses running in The Man from Snowy River".)
